Perplexity Launches Full API Platform for Agents

Perplexity announced a consolidated API platform that bundles agent orchestration, search, embeddings, and upcoming sandboxed code execution into a single developer surface. The Search API draws from a 200 billion URL index refreshed in real time - the same backend powering their consumer product - and their new pplx-embed-v1-4B model claims top retrieval benchmark scores. Multi-model support across 19 providers means developers can swap underlying models without changing the orchestration layer. The move positions Perplexity less as a search engine competitor to Google and more as infrastructure competing with the likes of LangChain and Together AI. Every major AI company seems to be converging on the same bet: that the real revenue sits in developer tooling, not consumer chat interfaces.
