Sierra Redesigns Engineering Interviews Around AI Tools
Sierra dropped its traditional coding and algorithms interviews entirely, replacing them with a three-phase onsite where candidates plan a product, build it in two hours using whatever AI tools they want, then defend their decisions in a review session. The shift reflects a specific belief: mechanical coding ability matters less when agents handle implementation, but product thinking and technical judgment around data models, abstractions, and scalability still do. Sierra also changed its debrief from "should we hire" to "where would this person thrive" - hiring for strengths rather than filtering for weaknesses. Stripe, Shopify, and other engineering-heavy companies have been publicly rethinking interview loops in the same direction, though few have gone as far as removing algorithms entirely.
