Anthropic Acquires Coefficient Bio for $400M

Anthropic paid roughly $400 million in an all-stock deal for Coefficient Bio, a stealth biotech startup with fewer than 10 employees founded by Nathan Frey and Samuel Stanton, both ex-Genentech Prescient Design. The team built an AI platform for drug R&D planning, clinical regulatory strategy, and drug target identification, and will now join Anthropic's healthcare life sciences group. The price tag for a sub-10 person team signals how aggressively Anthropic values specialized domain expertise that can turn Claude into a vertical product. Anthropic launched Claude for Life Sciences in October 2025 but hasn't yet cracked the deep integration that generates sticky revenue in pharma workflows. Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI have all been making similar healthcare-specific AI moves over the past year, and the acqui-hire economics for teams that understand both LLMs and drug development are clearly escalating.
