Meta Builds Its Own Search to Drop Google Dependency
Meta is developing an AI-powered search engine with its own web crawler, aiming to stop relying on Google and Microsoft for the real-time answers Meta AI delivers across Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook. With over 185 million weekly active users on Meta AI, the volume of search queries flowing through third-party providers represents both a cost center and a strategic vulnerability. Building in-house search gives Meta control over the data pipeline feeding its chatbot and keeps ad-adjacent traffic from leaking to competitors. Perplexity, OpenAI, and Apple have all made similar moves toward owning their search infrastructure in the past year - the pattern is consistent: once an AI product reaches scale, outsourcing web retrieval stops making sense.
