OpenAI Acquires Astral to Strengthen Codex for Python
OpenAI is acquiring Astral, the team behind uv, Ruff, and ty — Rust-based Python tools used across millions of developer workflows for dependency management, linting, and type checking. Astral's team will join OpenAI's Codex division, which already has over two million weekly active users. The open-source projects will continue to be maintained. The acquisition makes sense when you look at what Codex needs: tight integration with the actual tooling developers reach for daily, not just the ability to generate code. Anthropic has been investing heavily in Claude Code's developer experience, and xAI just poached engineers from Cursor - OpenAI is buying its way into the Python toolchain rather than building from scratch. Acquiring the most popular modern Python infrastructure gives Codex a distribution advantage that no prompt engineering can replicate.
