OpenClaw Triggers AI Agent Frenzy Across China

cnbc.com | ksl | |

Baidu, Tencent, Alibaba, ByteDance, and JD.com are all racing to onboard users onto OpenClaw, the open-source AI agent framework built by Austrian developer Peter Steinberger. Nearly 1,000 people lined up outside Tencent's Shenzhen HQ to get it installed on their laptops - students, retirees, office workers. Users call their agents "lobsters" and train them through continuous feedback, turning agentic AI adoption into something closer to a cultural movement than an enterprise rollout. Local governments are fueling it too: Shenzhen's Longgang district is offering grants up to 10 million yuan for solo founders building on OpenClaw, and Wuxi is funding robotics applications. The speed of grassroots adoption in China has no equivalent in the US or Europe, where agentic AI remains primarily a developer and enterprise story.
